A less energy-dependent nation

“If every U.S. citizen ate just one meal a week (any meal) composed of locally and organically raised meats and produce, we would reduce our country’s oil consumption by over 1.1 million barrels of oil every week.  Small changes in buying habits can make big differences.  Becoming a less energy-dependent nation may just need to start with a good breakfast. . .

And, as our “hen farmers” clean chicken waste from the coop to the compost pile, be reminded of the EPA’s 2007 greenhouse gas inventory report that states: the largest source of human-caused methane is landfills, not cattle.  And it’s the biodegradable portion of the landfill, everything from garden waste to leftover food and wood scraps.  Only 2% of this waste in the U.S. is diverted to compost piles.  With the help of Urban Hens, this waste will become a food source on three levels: Boulder will divert food and garden waste to area chickens and then to the compost pile.  Talk about a golden egg, or better yet - a green egg! ”
